Illnesses such as coughs, sore throats and earache are extremely common in young children, but did you know that children’s ‘super bodies’ are designed to fight off many common illnesses, without needing antibiotics?
The NHS in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland is sharing important guidance for parents and carers on how to manage common winter ailments including earache and sore throats. While these infections can be unpleasant for children and their caregivers, they are most often caused by viruses and therefore, do not need to be treated with antibiotics.
Antibiotics rarely speed up recovery for these conditions because they have no effect on viruses and could risk antibiotic resistance in the future. Instead your children’s ‘super bodies’ will get to work, most children with a normal immune system and up to date immunisations will recover in the same amount of time for these ailments with or without antibiotics.
The ‘Super Bodies’ campaign provides parents and carers with a helpful guide on simple at-home treatments they can do to treat these and many other common ailments. It also helps to provide guidance on how to spot the signs of more serious illnesses and knowing when and where to go for medical help.
